Sony BMG uses PaperFoam® in CarbonNeutral® music release

Publication date: 15/10/2007

“Sony BMG uses the PaperFoam tray because it is the preferable earth-friendly packaging. The PaperFoam solution is the CD packaging with the lowest CO2 emissions in the market and is the best fit with the current standard for CD packaging."

Alison Calvert – Catalogue Marketing UK, Sony BMG

Together with The CarbonNeutral Company, Sony BMG has launched a CD series in the U.K. under the banner “Carbon Neutral Entertainment”. The CO2 emissions generated in the production of each album have been calculated and balanced to net zero by investing in emissions-reductions projects around the world that save the equivalent quantity of CO2.

Each album will contain a source of ten CO2-reducing tips to help consumers reflect consciously on reducing their contribution to global warming.

Since 27 August, 22 titles have been released in the eco-friendly series, including Bob Dylan's "Highway 61 Revisited" and "Blonde on Blonde," Miles Davis' "A Kind of Blue" and Simon and Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water." In each case, the release is with the approval of the artists concerned.

Sony BMG made a careful search for the packaging to be used and have selected the PaperFoam solution. Alison Calvert comments: “Considering the options for earth-friendly CD packaging, the PaperFoam solution is superior to others. Made of natural based products like potato starch, and being 100% biodegradable and recyclable with paper, the PaperFoam packaging is the one preferred by Sony BMG. The format being the same as current petroleum based solutions makes efficient assembly possible and is thus cost-effective.”

Compared with traditional plastic packaging, the PaperFoam tray has only a tiny fraction of CO2 emissions and energy consumption.

The use of the PaperFoam packaging by Sony BMG follows the lead set by major music labels such as Universal Music and EMI. In the innovative and fast-developing market of earth-friendly CD packaging, PaperFoam has adopted a leading position with expanding sales worldwide.
